How do you find a great babysitter or nanny?

October 17, 2008

our guide to finding a great babysitter for your family

The best way to find a babysitter is to post a job and let them find you. I know it's a little counterintuitive, but it works!  The pages with most hits on the findasitter website is the ‘job search’ page. So I know this is true.  From your job posting, babysitters who are actively seeking a job will come to you with a summary of their strengths and how they're a good fit for your family.   Try to put some personality into your job posting, be sure to tell a bit about your family and, important, make sure you've included accurate contact information and you check your emails or phone regularly.

Another way is to use the general postcode or town search and use a wider area than immediately local to you. My first nanny lived much further away than I’d thought to advertise but the distance didn’t matter as much to her as I’d thought it would.  This way, you get to see all the people who are looking for babysitting work in your area -- hundreds in somewhere like London (most of whom will have an Oyster card!) - and in other towns and rural areas many will have a car.

Also, when you make the first contact with a babysitter, make sure you give them lots of information.  Babysitters want to know a little bit about you before they reply to you or your job posting.  So add in a note about you and your family, whilst still maintaining your privacy.
